Define the practice steps by toggling the buttons below, and setting the delays and parameters.

Each message

1: Choice - which message is played

Random (F) chooses the message at random, the first as well as those after it; a list in groups has a button for each level of grouping, named by the list. Off, the messages are played in order.

Once Each (O) chooses only messages not yet played, and stops when every one has been.

Until right chooses only messages not yet marked right in this run, and stops when every one has been; it and Once Each are never both on. Favour sets how much more often the messages you have missed come up: Evenly, A little, More or Mostly.

2: Introduction - hear or see the message first

With Know first: Flashcard (Shift+C) shows the message and Speech (Shift+T) says it, and one of them is always on. With Flashcard on, the step lasts at least the time in the box (e.g. “1000”, “5dit”, “3fdit”, “1ws”), or as long as the speech if that is longer. Use to set the voice, and the to set the flashcard size, case and contrast.

Speech synthesis is not available. Open for details.

3: Morse - copy the message

One of these is always on:

Morse plays the message at your speed.
Speed Racer plays it faster (or slower) first, stepping down (or up) to your speed; configure it in the .
Build Up plays it built up a word at a time first (a character at a time for one word), then whole (E does this once for the message you are on).

Count (1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 or 6) plays the Morse 1 to 5 times, or forever until Next (M) is pressed. Each play of the Morse ends with a word space ( ms), and between one play and the next there is also the time in the box (e.g. “1000”, “5dit”, “3fdit”, “1ws”).

The set the speed, pitch and volume. The set the noise, fading and other stations it is heard through.

4: Recognise - time to work out what it was

Either Hold until you press Play (/ , Space or 0), or wait for the time in the box (e.g. “1000”, “5dit”, “3fdit”, “1ws”).Say the message as soon as you know it: the time in the box (e.g. “1000”, “5dit”, “3fdit”, “1ws”) is the longest the microphone waits for you to start. Press X (or Missed) if you have not got it.

5: Reveal - hear or see what it was

Flashcard (C) shows the message and Speech (T) says it. With Flashcard on, the step lasts at least the time in the box (e.g. “1000”, “5dit”, “3fdit”, “1ws”), or as long as the speech if that is longer.

Speech synthesis is not available. Open for details.

6: Recap - hear it once more

Morse (Shift+M) plays the message once more, followed by the time in the box (e.g. “1000”, “5dit”, “3fdit”, “1ws”).

7: Bell - the message is over

Bell (B) rings at the end of each message. The set the sound and volume.

8: Wait - before the next message

Either Hold until you press Play (/ , Space or 0), or pause for the time in the box (e.g. “1000”, “5dit”, “3fdit”, “1ws”).

9: Then - what comes next

Next Message (L) off stops after this message, on plays the next message, and 1 plays this message again.

TapClick a tile to play it once. The orange border is the current message, which Play plays next; Ctrl+Click moves it, as do the arrow keys when a tile has the focus. Shift+ClickA long press turns a tile off or on, and Q the current one: a tile that is off is never chosen, but can still be played.

The soundboard is empty: choose some messages in Choose the words.

Change log

Speed Racer lets you try copying at a higher speed than you are used to, and then gradually reduces the speed to a more comfortable one. Or you can start at a slower speed and gradually increase it.

You can choose to vary the character speed, Farnsworth speed, or both:

The table below shows the percentage speed change along with the character and Farnsworth speeds for each time the message will be played.

You can adjust the number of times the message is repeated (2 to 5), the maximum percentage change (-99% to +100%), and your base character and Farnsworth speeds:

The Farnsworth Speed cannot go above the Character Speed: where the modified Farnsworth Speed has been limited by the Character Speed, it is shown in red.

Your advanced timing settings in mean that there is no simple Character Speed and/or Farnsworth Speed. The boosted speeds will use precise Character/Farnsworth speeds and the final play will use your custom settings.
